CHUMP

By Sue Goberdhan

The Kumar Family suffers a tremendous loss when they suddenly lose their family’s matriarch. While the family gathers at Grandma Baby’s “Nine Day,” they learn a hard but necessary lesson about the root of their grief, the fortitude of their joy, and the tension that arises from everyone’s favourite card game: T’ruup Chaal.

CHUMP is being workshopped from May 29 to June 11, 2023 at the Studio Theatre as part of Sue Goberdhan’s time with the CONFLUENCE Fellowship at Catalyst Theatre.

This piece is made possible with contributions from Catalyst Theatre, Fringe Theatre, Alpacalypse Productions, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Marnie Day

By Matt graham and Sue Goberdhan

Everybody grieves in their own way. For Marnie’s friends, the last five years have been a slow trudge through grief as Leah, Jackson, and Sam try to come to terms with losing her and what it did to their chosen family. For Marnie, the last five years have been spent watching her friends stuck in the same old dingy apartment she left them in. She needs to move on, but might not be able to until they come to terms with her death and move on themselves.

The group reunites on the fifth anniversary of Marnie’s passing, but will a break from tradition be what they need to finally gain some closure?
